The Songs ~ Buy It
The Devil on a Bench in Stanley Park
It seems strangely appropriate that the first-ever collaboration between super-eclectic Canadian labels Six Shooter Records (Toronto) and Saved By Vinyl (Calgary) is named after outdoor furniture in Vancouver which is populated by denizens of the netherworld. That kind of "gothic understatement" (according to Uncut Magazine) is just what singer-songwriter Justin Rutledge is all about, and he demonstrates it aptly on his second album, The Devil on a Bench in Stanley Park. Building on the foundation of 2004's No Never Alone, Justin has written ten new songs that pilot the listener through the areas of the heart and mind where shadows tend to reside, where memories are neon, and where quiet men take quiet stands. The vinyl version distills the journey to seven heartworn songs, with guest appearances by Oh Susanna, Melissa McClelland, and members of Blue Rodeo and Rheostatics.
