Ah, the brilliance of man...

It's ironic that this little anecdote actually ties in with SBR themes, because I think I would have shared it with you anyway...

So the phone rings this morning (note: this is around 10 a.m. on a Saturday morning), and I answer it and say "hello", and hear the tell-tale pause of what's going to be some kind of telemarketing call. A very disinterested voice comes on and says, "Hi, my name is Travis, and I'm calling on behalf of the Edmonton Cracker Cats baseball team, and I wanted to let you know about our upcoming family fun weekend, and I'm wondering if you'd like to get tickets for you and the family or sponsor kids from Woods' Homes."

"Well, I appreciate the call, but you do know I live in Calgary, right?" I respond.

"Uh, yeah, the computer does say that," Travis says.

"Thanks, but I think I'll pass this time around," I say.

(This telemarketing moment is only surpassed by the one I got at 7:00 in the morning at a time when I lived in a basement apartment asking me if I needed roofing services...)

Anyway...speaking of Highway 2 rivalries, The Summerlad are going to be at the Power Plant in Edmonton tonight, and Old Reliable and The Swiftys are going to be at the Hi Fi Club in Calgary. Neat product tie-in, huh?

And in case you missed the memo, The Summerlad's Eastern Canada tour starts on June 2, and includes a stop at NXNE. Check out the Lads' website for full details!

Now, back to your regular weekend morning schedule...sigh...

Par-tay!

So if you're in Calgary tonight, head on down to the Hi-Fi Club for our first vinyl release party! It's a 7-inch tribute to Grant Hart (the legendary Husker Du drummer/songwriter/man about town) by The Maykings and Lorrie Matheson and the Brass Tacks. Not only that, but it's the last piece of 7-inch vinyl ever manufactured in Canada, as far as we can tell...and how weird is that?

So come see us, and while you're doing that, you can see all the parties involved in this recording performing - that is, not only the bands on the album, but the man whose songs they're performing. (Grant Hart up close and personal - what's better than that?)

see ya there!

To Do May 7...

I know, I know - you don't want to plan your Saturday afternoon too far in advance. But if you get a chance, make sure to tune in to Definitely Not The Opera on CBC Radio One to hear Dawn chatting with host Nick Purdon, as part of DNTO's visit to Calgary! And you'll also get to hear Vailhalen, in a "musical tip" of the hat to the soon-to-be-available full-length album Pop Violence.

(Let us know if you know which album's playing in the background of the interview - maybe we'll spot ya a sticker!)
